About this calculator

Calculate how much it costs to charge an electric vehicle, accounting for battery capacity, charge level, electricity price, and charging losses.

Not all electricity that flows into a charger ends up stored in the battery — some is lost as heat during the AC-to-DC conversion and battery management process, typically 10-15% depending on the charger and conditions. This calculator accounts for that loss, so the estimated cost reflects what you'll actually be billed for, not just the usable energy delivered to the battery.

How to use

  1. Enter the battery capacity in kWh.
  2. Enter the starting and target charge percentage.
  3. Enter your electricity price per kWh.
  4. Optionally adjust the charging efficiency loss (default 10%).
  5. Press Calculate to see the total charging cost, and cost per mile if you provide your EV's efficiency (mi/kWh).

Tips

  • Charging at home overnight is usually far cheaper per kWh than public DC fast chargers, which often carry a premium price.

Formula

Energy needed (kWh) = Battery Capacity × (Target % − Start %) ÷ (1 − Efficiency Loss) Cost = Energy needed × Price per kWh
