About this calculator

Work out the final price of an item after a discount, whether it's a percentage off or a flat dollar amount off, and see exactly how much you save.

Stores advertise discounts in two different ways, and it's worth knowing how each one is calculated. A percentage-off discount scales with the price: a $68 pair of shoes marked 30% off drops by 0.30 × $68 = $20.40, bringing the price to $47.60. The bigger the original price, the bigger the dollar savings, even though the percentage stays the same. A fixed-amount discount is a flat subtraction that doesn't care about the original price at all. A $120 haircut-and-color package with a $25-off coupon simply becomes $120 − $25 = $95 — the same $25 comes off whether the service costs $120 or $12,000. That also means a fixed discount is worth proportionally more on cheaper items and proportionally less on expensive ones, the opposite of how a percentage discount behaves. This calculator handles both: choose "Percent Off" or "Fixed Amount" to match how your discount is actually advertised, and optionally add a tax rate if tax applies to the discounted price rather than the original one.

How to use

  1. Enter the original price.
  2. Choose whether your discount is a percentage off or a fixed dollar amount off.
  3. Enter the discount value.
  4. Optionally enter a tax rate if tax applies after the discount.
  5. Press Calculate to see the discounted price and total savings.

Formula

Percent Off: Final Price = Original Price × (1 − Discount % ÷ 100) Fixed Amount: Final Price = Original Price − Discount Amount
