How the Fuel Economy Converter works

Fuel economy units don't all move the same direction — MPG and km/L go up as a vehicle gets more efficient, while L/100km goes down. This converter handles that automatically, so you can compare a US window-sticker MPG rating directly against a European L/100km spec.

Tips for the Fuel Economy Converter

  • US and UK gallons are different sizes, so "MPG (US)" and "MPG (UK)" for the same vehicle are not the same number.

Formula used by the Fuel Economy Converter

L/100km = 100 ÷ (km/L) MPG (US) = (km/L) × 2.352145833 MPG (UK) = (km/L) × 2.824809363

Example: Fuel Economy Converter

Converting 30 MPG (US) to liters per 100 km

  • Value: 30 MPG (US)
  • Convert to: L/100km

Result: ≈ 7.84 L/100km

30 MPG (US) ÷ 2.352145833 ≈ 12.75 km/L, and 100 ÷ 12.75 ≈ 7.84 L/100km.
