Tips for the Data Storage Converter
- Binary units (1024-based) and decimal units (1000-based) can produce noticeably different results at large sizes.
Example: Data Storage Converter
Converting 5 GB to MB — decimal vs. binary base
- Value: 5
- From / To: Gigabyte → Megabyte
- Base: Decimal (1000)
Result: 5,000 MB in Decimal mode — 5,120 MiB if switched to Binary mode
In Decimal mode each step multiplies by 1000, so 5 GB = 5 × 1,000 = 5,000 MB. Switching the toggle to Binary mode relabels the same units as Gibibyte/Mebibyte and multiplies by 1,024 instead, so the same "5 to unit below" conversion gives 5 × 1,024 = 5,120 MiB — which is why the base toggle changes the result even though the dropdown position looks the same.
